Layer 01指南
What 3D printing actually costs.
Whether you are pricing your first print or already selling 3D-printed products, the price you pay to have each one made, packed and posted decides your margin. This guide answers what 3D printing costs in general, breaks down what sits inside a 3D-print fulfilment cost, and shows how to model your margin before you list. Real figures always come from a live quote on your own file, so treat any numbers here as illustrative.
Makr3D is the early-access platform; Yorkshire3D is the UK print farm in Huddersfield behind it, printing 500+ plates a day on hundreds of Bambu printers, with 150,000+ orders shipped since 2019. You can see Makr3D’s pricing for the transactional detail.
Layer 02
How much does 3D printing cost?
If you print at home, most of the cost is not the filament: it is the printer itself, spares, failed plates and your hours. If you use a fulfilment service like Makr3D, all of that folds into one per-order price. Each file is quoted individually: dropship fulfilment starts from a £1 minimum charge per order and rises with the work in the part, all before postage, which is added separately from carrier rate tables. There is no monthly fee at launch, and bulk tiers apply automatically so the per-unit price falls as quantity rises. The only way to know your exact number is to run a live quote on your file.
Layer 03Worked examples
What do 3D printing rates look like in practice?
Rates for 3D printing are built from inputs, not pulled from a menu: filament weight, machine time, colour and nozzle handling, the QA check, packaging and postage. The worked examples below were generated at Makr3D’s live rates for typical creator products, per unit and excluding postage. They are proof points, not a rate card.
Layer 04
Layer 06
Layer 07
Layer 08Cost FAQ
Common questions about 3D printing costs
- How much does it cost to 3D print something?
- With made-to-order fulfilment, small single-colour PLA parts quote from around £1.29 ex VAT as a worked example, before postage. Larger, multi-colour or multi-part pieces cost more because they use more filament and machine time. There is no flat sticker price: every file is quoted individually, from a £1 minimum fulfilment charge per order.
- Is 3D printing expensive?
- Not at small-part scale. Cost rises with size, print time and colour changes rather than visual complexity, so a palm-size toy stays cheap while a large display piece does not. Running your own printer moves the cost up front instead: machines, filament stock, failed prints and your own hours. Fulfilment converts all of that into a single per-order price you only pay when you sell.
- What are typical 3D printing rates?
- Rates are built from filament weight, machine time, colour and nozzle handling, the human QA check, packaging and postage. Makr3D does not price from a flat hourly rate card; each file is quoted automatically from those inputs, so simple parts never subsidise complex ones and you see the exact figure before you list.
- How long does 3D printing take?
- Most single-colour parts print in a few hours; large or multi-colour pieces can hold a machine for a day or more. For fulfilled orders, dispatch is typically 1-2 working days, with one extra working day for PETG or 0.2mm and 0.6mm nozzles. Dispatch times are estimates, not guaranteed dates.
