Shapeways替代方案
Shapeways was the best-known self-serve 3D-printing marketplace for over a decade, famous for industrial processes and a broad material range including nylon, resin and metal. After a 2024 bankruptcy and an asset sale to Manuevo BV, the relaunched Shapeways describes itself as a turnkey manufacturing partner for hardware businesses, with quote-led sales in place of the old upload-and-order marketplace. This page is for the makers and sellers that model no longer serves.
类别差异
Makr3D is not a like-for-like Shapeways replacement, and it is worth being upfront about that. Shapeways leaned on industrial processes (SLS, MJF, metal) across many materials, and its relaunched business now serves hardware companies through a sales-led process; Makr3D runs an owned Bambu FDM farm in PLA and PETG, built specifically for selling and fulfilling physical 3D-printed consumer products, self-serve from upload to dispatch. If what you sold through Shapeways prints well in FDM, Makr3D gives you UK-based, faithful Bambu/Orca 3MF production with white-label dispatch and no monthly fee. If you depended on SLS, MJF, resin or metal, Makr3D is not the right fit yet.

What actually happened to Shapeways
None of what follows is a criticism. The relaunched Shapeways made a deliberate strategic choice, and for hardware companies it may be a good one. But the choice changes who the service is for, and that is why so many former customers are searching for an alternative.
2024: bankruptcy
Shapeways BV ceased operations and publicly filed for bankruptcy in 2024, after more than fifteen years as the best-known self-serve 3D-printing marketplace.
The asset sale
Manuevo BV, a Dutch firm from Eindhoven, bought the assets of Shapeways BV, and the site came back online under new ownership.
The repositioning
The relaunched Shapeways describes itself as a turnkey manufacturing partner for hardware businesses. Its calls to action are quote requests and specialist calls, not the old upload-and-order flow.
The practical consequence: if you were a maker, designer or ecommerce seller who used Shapeways as a self-serve production partner, the upload-and-order route you built your product line on is no longer what the company sells. A turnkey manufacturing partner that asks you to book a call is built for a different kind of buyer.
The self-serve audience Shapeways built, and then outgrew
Look at where the alternative conversations happen: scale-model forums, slot-car communities, tabletop groups, Etsy seller threads. These are people who need per-unit production without a sales cycle.
Tabletop and miniature sellers
Terrain, accessories, tokens and larger display pieces print well in FDM. Very fine resin-class detail is the honest exception, so sample the sculpt first.
Scale-model and slot-car hobbyists
Functional parts, bodies, chassis components and replacement pieces are classic FDM work: strong, repeatable and cheap enough to sell at hobby prices.
Etsy and ecommerce sellers
The core Makr3D fit: list the product, and each order is printed, checked, packed white-label and dispatched from the UK hub with tracking.
Designers selling consumer products
Upload the Bambu or Orca file you actually sliced. Faithful 3MF Mode keeps orientation, supports and colour mapping as production intent.
Feature by feature
The summary table above covers the category difference; this one covers the day-to-day details a switching seller actually feels.
| Feature | Makr3D | Shapeways |
|---|---|---|
| How you order | Self-serve: upload, instant per-file quote, order | Quote request, then a call with a specialist |
| 定价 | Instant and exact per file, from a £1 minimum fulfilment charge, no monthly fee | Quote-led through the sales process |
| Processes and materials | Bambu FDM in PLA and PETG, drawing on the 40+ filament colours stocked by Yorkshire3D | Industrial SLS, MJF, resin and metals: genuinely broader |
| Ecommerce order routing | Native Etsy and Shopify sync live today, plus CSV, manual entry and the API | Built around manufacturing projects, not storefront order flow |
| Branding on the parcel | White-label: your brand on the slip, nothing from the fulfilment provider | Not the focus of a B2B manufacturing engagement |
| Production checks | 打印前人工生产检查,外加履约流程中的质量保证 | Industrial engagement with specialist support |
| Where it is made | One owned UK farm in Huddersfield, shipping worldwide | US and EU industrial production network |
| Who it serves today | Creators and sellers of 3D-printed consumer products | Hardware businesses needing turnkey manufacturing |
Where Shapeways is still the right choice
Honesty matters more than winning the row count. If your parts need SLS nylon, MJF, resin or metal, or your business wants an engineering partner across design, prototyping and production, the relaunched Shapeways serves that properly and Makr3D does not. Makr3D is the faster self-serve home for FDM-friendly consumer products, not a metals bureau.
A UK production hub, not another US bureau
Every listed Shapeways alternative in the search results fulfils from the US. Makr3D prints, checks and dispatches from Huddersfield, so UK and EU buyers get a domestic or short shipping leg, UK sellers get VAT-compliant invoices from a VAT-registered UK company, and there is a named producer accountable for every parcel.
See the UK production hub behind the service, or how per-file pricing works.
Who does the printing
Makr3D production is powered by Yorkshire3D, a UK 3D-printing company trading since 2019 with 150,000+ orders shipped and a 4.9/5 customer rating. The farm runs 500+ plates a day, so a new Makr3D seller is joining a production line that already exists.
选择Makr3D的场景
您的产品适合FDM打印(PLA或PETG),面向英国或欧盟买家,且需要忠实于Bambu 3MF的生产,含白标发货及无月费。
选择 Shapeways 当
You specifically need an industrial process or material Makr3D does not offer yet, such as SLS nylon, resin or metal, or a quote-led manufacturing partner suits how your business buys.
The questions sellers actually ask
- Is Shapeways still in business?
- Yes, but it is a different business now. Shapeways BV filed for bankruptcy in 2024, its assets were bought by Manuevo BV of Eindhoven, and the relaunched Shapeways positions itself as a turnkey manufacturing partner for hardware businesses, with quotes and specialist calls rather than the old self-serve marketplace.
- What happened to the Shapeways marketplace?
- The upload-and-order marketplace that made Shapeways famous is no longer the centre of the business. The relaunched company targets hardware firms that need design, prototyping and production support, so indie makers and ecommerce sellers who relied on self-serve ordering have largely been left to find another route.
- Is Makr3D a direct replacement for Shapeways?
- Only for part of what Shapeways did. Makr3D replaces the self-serve, sell-and-fulfil side for products that print well in FDM: upload a Bambu or Orca file, get an instant quote, and orders are printed, checked and dispatched white-label from a UK farm. It does not offer the industrial SLS, MJF, resin or metal processes, so parts that depended on those still need an industrial bureau.
- Is there a UK-based Shapeways alternative?
- Makr3D is UK-based by design: production runs on an owned Bambu farm in Huddersfield operated by Yorkshire3D, a UK 3D-printing company with 150,000+ orders shipped since 2019 and a 4.9/5 customer rating. For UK and EU sellers that means domestic dispatch, VAT invoices and an accountable named producer.
- Can Makr3D print the miniatures, models and hobby parts I ordered from Shapeways?
- Often, yes: functional hobby parts, scale-model components, tabletop pieces and display models print well in PLA or PETG on Bambu hardware, and multicolour parts are auto-quoted up to four colours. Very fine resin-class detail is the honest exception, because FDM has a different resolution character. Order a single sample first and judge the finish yourself.
- How does Makr3D pricing compare with Shapeways?
- Makr3D is self-serve: every file gets an instant, exact quote from a £1 minimum fulfilment charge, with shipping shown upfront, and there is no monthly fee. The relaunched Shapeways prices work through its quote and sales process, so a like-for-like number depends on your part. The practical difference is that you can price a Makr3D product before you ever speak to anyone.
