Definitions first

The two models, defined properly

What is print on demand?

Print on demand is a fulfilment model where nothing is produced until a customer orders it. In its classic 2D form, you upload artwork, it is applied to a catalogue blank such as a t-shirt, mug or poster, and a partner prints and ships each order. No inventory, no minimum runs, pay per order.

What is 3D print fulfilment?

3D print fulfilment is the same no-inventory, per-order idea applied to physical, three-dimensional products. The input is your own 3D file rather than artwork on a blank: the file is checked and sliced, printed on a farm, quality-checked, then packed and dispatched under your brand. Makr3D runs this from an owned UK Bambu farm doing 500+ plates a day.

The economics

Why the pricing logic is different

In 2D POD, the blank sets the floor: every seller printing on the same mug starts from the same base cost, so price competition is brutal and margins converge. In 3D print fulfilment, cost scales with filament and print time, so the price is a property of your design. A small desk toy and a large display piece from the same seller can sit at completely different price points.

That is also why 3D quotes are per file rather than from a rate card: Makr3D prices each design exactly, from a £1 minimum fulfilment charge, before you list it. See worked pricing examples for real numbers.

The order flow, either way

  1. 01You list a product in your store at your price.
  2. 02A customer orders; the order routes to the fulfilment partner automatically or by CSV, manual entry or API.
  3. 03The partner produces that single unit: printing a blank in 2D POD, printing your file on a farm in 3D fulfilment.
  4. 04The order is checked, packed white-label and shipped tracked to your customer.
  5. 05You keep the gap between your retail price and the fulfilment plus shipping cost.

The file is the product

A 2D POD order is artwork placed on a template; there is not much a partner can get wrong beyond print quality. A 3D-printed product carries production decisions inside the file: orientation for strength, supports for surface finish, layer height for detail, colour mapping for the final look. That is why Makr3D honours Bambu/Orca 3MF intent and puts a human production check before printing on every order.

Faithful 3MFモードの仕組み

Most sellers should run both

This page is a comparison, but the models are not rivals. If you already run a POD store, a 3D-printed line is a new aisle, not a replacement: same storefront, same order flow, a different kind of product with different margin behaviour. The step-by-step route from an existing POD store to a first 3D product is the whole subject of our POD-to-3D guide.

The questions sellers actually ask

What is print on demand?
Print on demand (POD) is a fulfilment model where a product is only produced after a customer orders it. Classically that means 2D merchandise: you upload artwork, it is applied to a catalogue blank such as a t-shirt, mug or poster, and a partner prints and ships each order. The seller holds no inventory and pays per order.
What is 3D print fulfilment?
3D print fulfilment applies the same per-order, no-inventory idea to physical 3D-printed products. Instead of artwork on a blank, the input is a 3D file (3MF or STL). When an order arrives, the file is checked, printed on a farm, quality-checked, packed and dispatched under the seller’s brand. Makr3D does this from an owned UK Bambu farm.
How does print on demand work?
You list a product in your store at your price. When a customer buys, the order routes to the fulfilment partner, who produces that single unit and ships it, usually white-label. Your margin is the gap between your retail price and the fulfilment plus shipping cost. The mechanics are identical for 2D POD and 3D print fulfilment; only the production step differs.
Is print on demand profitable?
It can be, and the biggest lever is competition. Classic 2D POD is crowded because everyone draws from the same blank catalogues, which squeezes prices. 3D-printed products are harder to copy like-for-like, and pricing scales with filament and print time, so distinctive products carry stronger margins. Either way, profit depends on pricing honestly against the per-order cost, which Makr3D quotes exactly per file before you list.
Does print on demand require inventory?
No, and that is the point of the model. Nothing is made until it is sold, so there is no stock to buy, store or write off. That holds for 3D print fulfilment too: Makr3D prints each order as it arrives, and if you ever want physical stock you can bulk order to yourself from the same hub.
Is 3D printing a form of print on demand?
When it is run per order, yes. "Print on demand" describes the business model, not the printing technology, so a 3D print farm producing single orders as they arrive is POD in the truest sense. The practical differences are the input (a sliced 3D file rather than flat artwork) and pricing (filament and machine time rather than a fixed blank cost).
Do I need a 3D printer to sell 3D-printed products?
No. That is exactly what 3D print fulfilment removes. You list the product, and the farm prints, checks, packs and ships each order. You never touch a printer, filament or a failed print; you pay the quoted fulfilment and shipping per order.
